Why Being ‘Positive’ All the Time Is Actually Blocking Your Abundance
You have been doing your best to stay positive. You have said the affirmations and written in the gratitude journal. And you have chosen to focus on the good, to redirect the negative thoughts, and to keep your chin up even on the days when everything inside you wanted to do the opposite.
And yet something still feels stuck. The abundance you have been calling in has not arrived. The flow feels inconsistent at best. And somewhere, quietly, you have started to wonder whether you are simply not positive enough, whether there is something fundamentally wrong with the frequency you are holding.
There is not. But there is something important worth understanding about what positivity actually does to your energy field. Forced optimism, however well-intentioned, can quietly become one of the most effective blocks to receiving there is.
What toxic positivity actually is
Toxic positivity is the tendency to insist on a positive outlook regardless of the circumstances. It dismisses, minimises, or suppresses difficult emotions in the name of maintaining good vibrations. It is not the same as genuine optimism, which holds hope while also making room for the full range of human experience. Toxic positivity bypasses that range entirely. It says: only high-vibration emotions are welcome here.
The spiritual manifestation world has, unintentionally, contributed to this pattern. The understanding that energy attracts like energy, that your emotional frequency shapes what you draw into your life, is real and true. However, somewhere along the way, it hardened into something more rigid: the belief that negative emotions lower your vibration and that a lowered vibration repels abundance. The logical conclusion is simple, if flawed. You must suppress anything that does not feel good, as quickly as possible, or risk sabotaging what you are trying to create.
This is where the problem lives. Not in the law of resonance itself, but in the misunderstanding of what genuine emotional frequency actually means.
Why suppressed emotions lower your frequency more than feeling them does
Here is what your energy field actually knows: an emotion you have felt, processed, and released moves through you cleanly. It arises, you meet it, and it completes. The field remains open, responsive, and receptive. An emotion you suppress, bypass, or force into positivity does not disappear. It goes underground. It lodges in the body, settles in the field, and runs as unprocessed charge beneath the surface of your carefully curated optimism.
Research into emotional suppression consistently shows that the effort of suppressing an unwanted emotion actually amplifies its physiological impact. It raises stress hormone levels, elevates heart rate, and consumes significant cognitive and energetic resources. You are not clearing the emotion by overriding it with positivity. You are simply spending energy to hold it down.
And a field that is spending its energy holding something down is not a field that is open to receiving. It is a field that is working very hard just to appear stable, and that effort, however invisible it seems, has a real cost.
What this looked like for one client
One of my clients had spent years in the spiritual community diligently choosing high-vibrational states. She meditated, she affirmed, she visualised. And still, the financial flow she was calling in would build and then mysteriously collapse. It was as though something kept pulling it back just as it arrived. When we worked together, we found years of grief, frustration, and fear that she had never let land. The moment she began to feel rather than manage her emotions, the field began to shift. It moved in ways that all her positive thinking never had.
The suppressed emotions were not lowering her vibration by existing. They were lowering it because she held them down.
The difference between authentic high frequency and performed positivity
Genuine high-frequency states- gratitude, joy, love, trust, wonder- arise naturally when the field is clear. You do not manufacture them. They become available when the effort of management no longer consumes the emotional body.
Performed positivity, by contrast, is a kind of energetic costume. It sits on top of whatever is actually present in the field without touching what is underneath. And the universe, which reads the field, not the costume, responds to what is actually there.
As I explore in Spiritual Abundance, align your energy for prosperity, true abundance frequency is one of genuine alignment: thoughts, emotions, and actions in harmony with the soul’s truth. That harmony is not possible when you are actively suppressing whole layers of emotional experience in the name of staying positive.
The path to genuine high frequency is not a bypass. It is integration. Feel the grief. Meet the fear. Acknowledge the frustration. Not to wallow in them, but to allow them to move, because emotions in motion are emotions completing their cycle. And a field where emotions can complete their cycle returns, naturally and without effort, to the high-frequency states that actually support receiving.
What your ‘negative’ emotions are actually telling you
Every emotion that arises, including the ones that feel unwelcome, carries information. Grief speaks to what you have loved. Anger speaks to what has violated your boundaries or your values. Fear speaks to what feels unsafe or uncertain. Frustration speaks to where your energy is meeting resistance.
None of these are enemies of abundance. In fact, each of them, when you meet it honestly, can become a doorway into greater clarity, greater alignment, and greater receptivity. Emotional intelligence research consistently demonstrates that the capacity to identify, process, and work constructively with the full spectrum of emotion, not just the pleasant half, is one of the strongest predictors of wellbeing, resilience, and effective functioning.
When you suppress a difficult emotion, you lose the information it carries. You lose the signal. And that signal, that particular piece of the field’s intelligence, often contains exactly the clarity you need to move forward.
How emotional processing opens the field to receive
The work of processing emotions is not dramatic. It does not require hours of crying or years of therapy, though both can be profoundly supportive. At its most essential, it is simply a willingness to be present with what is actually happening inside you: to turn toward the feeling rather than away from it, to give it space to exist without immediately reaching for something to make it stop.
Breath is the most immediate tool available. When a difficult emotion arises, breathe consciously into the part of the body where it lives, rather than reflexively tightening and avoiding it. That breath allows the nervous system to signal safety. And in that signal of safety, the emotion can begin to move.
Journaling is another. Not journaling that analyses or explains the emotion, but journaling that simply witnesses it, that gives it language without trying to fix it, reframe it, or make it positive before it is ready. As I explore in multidimensional energy clearing, emotional debris that you acknowledge and move clears space in the field for something new to arrive.
I created the Processing Emotions Workbook for exactly this kind of work. Inside, you will find trauma-informed worksheets, guided journaling prompts, and emotional regulation tools. They help you meet the full spectrum of your emotional experience with compassion and intelligence. The goal is not to keep you in the difficult feelings, but to support you in completing their natural cycle, so the field can return to genuine openness and flow. If you have been positivity-bypassing your way through difficult emotions and wondering why abundance still feels out of reach, this is where the real work begins.
You are allowed to feel everything
The most abundant people are not the most relentlessly positive. They are the most genuinely present: with their joy and with their grief, with their gratitude and with their fear, with their hope and with their honest uncertainty about whether any of this is working.
That presence, that willingness to be fully here in the actual texture of your experience, is not a low-vibration state. It is, in fact, one of the highest-frequency things a human being can do. It is what authentic alignment feels like from the inside. Not performed. Not curated. Simply real.
You do not have to earn abundance by being relentlessly positive. You simply have to be willing to be honest: with yourself, with your field, and with whatever emotions are present and asking to be met.
The field responds to truth far more readily than it responds to performance.
And the truth is: you are allowed to feel everything. All of it. Without losing your worthiness for a single moment.
